On Saturday, former President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to implement new sanctions against Russia, contingent upon the agreement of all NATO members to adopt their own punitive actions and cease purchasing Russian oil in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
NATO, a military alliance comprising 32 nations, includes the United States and numerous European Union members.
Trump proposed that NATO allies consider imposing tariffs ranging from 50% to 100% on China, suggesting this could assist in bringing an end to Russia's aggression in Ukraine, as China is a significant buyer of Russian oil.
Since the onset of the Ukraine war in February 2022, the United States and its European partners have enacted a series of sanctions targeting Russian businesses and exports, aiming to compel Moscow to halt hostilities and negotiate peace with Kyiv.
In recent weeks, the former president has consistently warned of potential additional sanctions against Russia.
In a social media message he referred to as a letter to NATO members and the global community, Trump criticized the purchase of Russian oil by certain NATO countries, labeling it 'shocking'.
He argued that such trade undermines the alliance's leverage over Moscow.
Trump further stated that imposing tariffs on China for its Russian oil purchases, which would be lifted after the conflict concludes, would significantly aid in ending the war.
He emphasized that China maintains a strong influence over Russia, and these tariffs could disrupt that control.
Trump has frequently claimed that the importation of Russian oil by nations, including India, is contributing to the continuation of Moscow's military actions.
In August, the Trump administration escalated tariffs on goods imported from India to 50% due to its Russian oil purchases, following an initial 25% reciprocal tariff.
At that time, New Delhi expressed that it was 'extremely unfortunate' for the US to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that many other countries were also undertaking in their national interests.
